When you misuse your credit card, you can end up costing yourself tons of money, despite the many rewards that can be reaped from cards.

Many people pay bills late (over 20 percent of Americans admitted to being in delinquent status, which is over 30 days late). In doing so, according to CNBC, “$23 billion worth of all credit card debt in the U.S. was delinquent.”

The first late payment fee isn’t that high, but subsequent late fees may be as high as $38 per payment. For those 21 percent who are in delinquent status, those first-time fees can be over $1.4 billion.
